Need a Little Help with Food Costs?
Many people are finding the cost of everyday essentials increasingly difficult. If you are struggling to afford food, please remember that support is available and there is no shame in asking for help.
Below are some organisations and services that may be able to help.
Food Banks
Food banks provide emergency food parcels for people experiencing financial hardship. Many are part of the Trussell network, while others are run independently by local charities and churches.
How to access:
Most Trussell food banks require a referral and food voucher from a professional such as:
- Your CF social worker or hospital team
- GP surgery
- Citizens Advice
- Housing association
- Local authority
- Other recognised support organisations
Use the Trussell website to find your nearest food bank and learn how to obtain a food voucher.

The Trussell Trust also offers a free Help through Hardship service, providing advice on benefits, grants, debt, and emergency support.

Independent Food Banks
Many communities have independent food banks that do not require a referral. Availability varies by area, so check locally through your council, local churches, community centres or online searches.
Community Fridges
Community Fridges help reduce food waste by sharing surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away. Fresh fruit, vegetables, bread and other items are often available free of charge.
How to access:
No referral is usually required. Simply visit your local Community Fridge during its opening times.
Too Good To Go
The Too Good To Go app allows you to buy surplus food from supermarkets, bakeries and cafés at a greatly reduced price. While not free, it can provide excellent value if you have a small amount to spend.
How to access:
Download the app, search your local area and reserve a ‘Surprise Bag’ for collection.

OLIO
OLIO is a free food-sharing app where neighbours, volunteers and local businesses share surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.
How to access:
No referral is needed. Simply download the app, create an account and browse food available nearby.

Social Supermarkets
Many areas now have social supermarkets, where members can purchase groceries at significantly reduced prices.
How to access:
Some schemes are open to everyone, while others require a referral or membership. Check with your local council or community organisation or search ‘social supermarkets’ to see what is available in your area.
